For my internship project I created a poster with my fellow interns at the City of Chula Vista Recreation Department. This poster was created so it can be taken out to community events and get people more involved with what we do at the Recreation Department. The main goal my fellow interns and I wanted to achieve when creating this poster was to make it very appealing to the eye, and easily accessible for them to find out more about the Recreation services here in Chula Vista. This project is important because the poster that was being used before was not very inviting, and did not attract people to learn more about Recreation in Chula Vista. To complete this project my group and I started by listing what we did not like about the old poster, and what we can do to make it better. After we came up with a draft of what we wanted the poster to look like we presented it to our mentors. They gave us feedback which was very helpful and was a big part in completing the project. I feel like the poster came out very nice and I hope when it is taken out to events that it attracts more people and really gets everyone interested in what the recreation department offers in Chula Vista.
A quality that I see in a lot of the workers around me is dedication. Everyone in the building I was working in had an attitude that they wanted to be there, and wanted to help make the community better. Just like the recreation departments mission statement which is, "we enrich our community through recreation opportunities and services" everyone who works there understands that they have a job to fulfill and want to provide the best experience and activities for the community. I know that if I can put dedication into my work like my fellow co workers during my internship I will be able to succeed throughout my life.
My view on life has changed quite a bit throughout my internship. One way it has changed is I have a better understanding of how it is to have a real job and how everything you do in your job can affect the people around you. Especially if you work in a department like recreation if you do not complete some of your tasks then it can really affect the department/organization as a whole. It is not like high school, if you do not finish a homework assignment it would only affect you and not anybody else in the class. Now I know that it is important to not only think about myself when completing an assignment but to think about how it can possibly affect other people in the future.
Although I have enjoyed my time here at the City of Chula Vista Recreation Department, it has also made me realize what kind of job I would like to pursue in the future. Here at the recreation department it requires a lot of computer work in an office usually on your own, and it has made me realize I want to be outside more and interacting with other people not just working bymyself. There are some parts of the recreation department that I have enjoyed, like attending meetings and events. It was amazing to meet successful new people at events and meetings because it was awesome to see someone with a stable job and career.
A skill I had coming into this internship was being familiar with using basic computer programs such as Microsoft Word. Throughout this internship I had to create multiple "How to" tutorials on Microsoft Word and because of my previous knowledge it made creating those tutorials a lot easier. If I had not had previous knowledge on using that program I feel my time creating the tutorials would have been much longer and a lot more difficult and stressful.
Throughout my internship there has been times where I need to speak up so I understood what I was doing better. For example, when I was working on a "How to" tutorial that taught others how to create an account on ActiveNet, I asked my mentor Wendi what I should title it because I had no idea what at all. I have definitly been follwing the tips on how to be a better intern and they have helped me durastically throughout my internship. Those tips have helped me so much to were I feel comfortable in my workplace and when you are comfortable where you work, is when you produce the best work possible.
This intenship has really got me interested in a lot of things that can apply to college. One thing this internship has helped me learn is I can attend meetings and really enjoy and get something out of them. Throughout this internship I have attended a good amount of meetings which helped me realize that they do not always have to be boring because what is being disscussed is only going to help out everyone. At my internship everyone around me is very proffesional and is there to get their work done. I want to incorporate being proffesional in all the work I do anywhere because you never know who is watching or who will see your work and that can possibly help you down the road.
For my internship project I plan on developing an overall marketing plan
for the Department that is inclusive of all sites and programs with the
intent of increasing revenue. I will as well develop a display board for
publicity and map out a year-long schedule of events to participate in.
Last, I will also create a Facebook campaign for user-generated photo
submission. In order to make this project happen the skills I will need are
collaborating with my fellow interns, basic knowledge on the computer, and
knowledge on the department I am working at. I will need support from my
mentor just in case I ever get stuck or have a question on anything.
My internship has been going great, although I do have some questions. One thing I would like to know, is if every year the interns who work at the Recreation Department of the City of Chula Vista work on the same work as the student interns the year before? If not, who decided what they work on. A connection I made with my internship is the amount of time I spend a computer. At school I spend almost my whole day on a computer. At my internship, unless I am out visiting other recreation centers, I am in my office working on my tasks for the day. I had a great time going to the Norman Park Senior Center and Parkway Community Center. While at the facilities I was given a tour by another High Tech intern! After the tour I had the opportunity to experience what would happen during their internships, it was a great and fun learning experience. I am driving myself to my internship every day and it has really taught me how important it is to leave at a certain time, so that you will be on time and prepared to start your day.

What struck me most about my workplace on the first day was that I was given my own office! This was a very exciting step in my life because it made me feel like I was working a real job and allowed me to get my work done. My colleagues are all very professional with everything they do and I know that I can get some great tips from all of them because they are all very hard workers and produce great work! I was really struck by the fact that I was working all types of different assignments like creating "How to" tutorials for the users of the city of chula vista website! I am very excited to continue my internship and learn how the recreation department of Chula Vista works! I am worried that I will not be able to complete all of my assignments, but I know if I put my mind to it I can achieve anything!
